I was non expecting too much from this book/novel because I downloaded it for costless. The beginning few pages did not hit me right away, merely then towards the middle, it became interesting. Why? because the discipline and plot conveys a common dilemma for individuals among my age and status .... hahahaha!

Phillips is an engaging writer but, in the case of this particular book, it's my opinion that he spends too much fourth dimension on relatively niggling incidents. Had he ended the part of the story revolving around the engagement of the hero and the heroine in a few chapters then moved on, I accept a feeling this novel would have been of greater interest to me. As it is, it ends just at the bespeak where my interest was beginning to pick up! David Graham Phillips was an American novelist and journalist of the muckraker tradition.Phillips was born in Madison, Indiana. Afterwards graduating from high school, Phillips entered Asbury College (at present DePauw University) - following which he received a caste from Princeton University in 1887.

Subsequently graduating from high school, Phillips entered Asbury College (now DePauw University) - post-obit which he received a degree from Princeton University in 1887.

After completing his pedagogy, Phillips worked as a newspaper reporter in Cincinnati, Ohio, before moving on to New York City where he was employed equally a reporter for The Sun from 1890 to 1893, then columnist and editor with the New York World until 1902.

In his spare time, he wrote a novel, The Slap-up God Success, that was published in 1901. The royalty income enabled him to work as a freelance journalist while continuing to write fiction. Writing manufactures for diverse prominent magazines, he began to develop a reputation equally a competent investigative journalist. Phillips' novels often commented on social bug of the day and oft chronicled events based on his real-life journalistic experiences.

He was considered a Progressive and for exposing corruption in the Senate he was labelled a muckraker. Phillips wrote an article in Cosmopolitan in March 1906, called "The Treason of the Senate," exposing campaign contributors being rewarded by certain members of the U. Due south. Senate. The story launched a scathing set on on Rhode Island senator Nelson W. Aldrich, and brought Phillips a peachy deal of national exposure. This and other similar manufactures helped lead to the passage of the Seventeenth Amendment to the Us Constitution, initiating popular instead of land-legislature election of U. S. senators.
